How to Trade Spot on OKX: Buy, Sell, and Check Unfilled Orders

OKXThe process for spot trading is: confirm availability → check your trading account balance → select a trading pair → place a market or limit order → review the execution details. Simply clicking the order button does not mean your buy or sell is complete. A limit order may remain pending or be partially filled, and a market order does not guarantee the displayed price or a full fill. If you intend to trade spot without borrowing, also make sure margin is turned off before placing an order.

This article explains regular spot order book trading. It is not a coin recommendation, price forecast, or profitable trading strategy. Menus and supported trading pairs may vary depending on the app or web version, your location, and your account status. If the screen shows that access is restricted, do not bypass the restriction with a VPN or a different identity; check with official support. Official materials reviewed: October 12, 2026.

1. First, distinguish spot trading from margin and futures

Spot trading exchanges the two assets in a trading pair. When you buy BTC in BTC/USDT, you pay USDT and receive BTC; when you sell BTC, you pay BTC and receive USDT. Spot trading without borrowing is not the same as margin trading, which involves borrowing money or coins, or futures trading, which involves contracts. Selling coins you hold must also be distinguished from opening a short futures position.

OKX The official spot trading guide explains that margin mode may be enabled by default for some accounts. Therefore, do not assume that a menu labeled Spot means you are trading without borrowing. Check the Margin and borrowing-related settings in the order window, and stop before placing an order if borrowing or leverage is enabled unintentionally. The available features for your account are determined by the screen shown when you are logged in. Eligibility and restrictions for users in Korea are covered separately in What to check when using OKX in Korea.

ItemWhat to check for spot trading without borrowing
Trading assetsExchange of two assets, such as BTC/USDT
HoldingsAvailable balance of the coin you intend to sell
Margin settingsWhether features such as borrowing or auto-borrow are enabled unintentionally
RiskPrice declines, liquidity, platform, and custody risks remain

Spot trading without borrowing has no liquidation mechanism arising from borrowing or leverage, but that does not make it safe or guarantee your principal. You should also consider the risks of a sharp decline in asset prices, trading interruptions, account compromise, and withdrawal restrictions. If you have not yet signed up or completed identity verification, first refer to OKXWhat to check before and after signing up; however, completing registration does not guarantee eligibility to use every product.

2. If you have a balance but cannot place an order, check where it is held

The basic flow in the official app guide is Assets → Transfer → select an asset → move it from Funding to Trading. This is an internal transfer within the same OKX account, and is different from an on-chain withdrawal to an external exchange or wallet. If you already have assets available for use in Trading, there is no reason to repeat the same transfer. Check your account mode and the actual source and destination locations shown on screen.

After transferring assets internally from the Funding account to the Trading account, use them to place a spot order
AKEYXIllustrative diagram. Funding → Trading is an internal account transfer. It is distinct from an external withdrawal over a blockchain network. This is not an actual OKX screen.

Your total asset valuation and the balance available for orders may differ. Check whether the assets are in Funding, whether you hold assets for another trading pair, or whether funds are tied up in existing open orders. Do not respond to an insufficient balance message by immediately making another deposit; first compare the balance location, selected asset, and open orders. If an external transfer itself has not yet been credited, first check the network, address, and Memo/Tag in Deposits, withdrawals, and troubleshooting uncredited transfers.

3. How to read trading pairs, prices, quantities, and amounts

In BTC/USDT, BTC at the beginning is the base asset being bought or sold, while USDT at the end is the quote asset used to display the price. If the price is 50,000 USDT, that means the price of 1 BTC is expressed in USDT. Here, USDT, USD, and Korean won are not the same unit; exchange rates and the risks of the stablecoin itself should also be distinguished.

Base and quote assets in BTC/USDT, and the direction assets move when buying and selling
AKEYXIllustrative diagram. When buying, you pay USDT and receive BTC; when selling, you pay BTC and receive USDT. The example assets are not recommendations. This is not an actual OKX screen.

AKEYX Hypothetical calculation: Assuming a price of 50,000 USDT/BTC and a quantity of 0.002 BTC, the transaction amount is 50,000 × 0.002 = 100 USDT. This is not a quote of the current market price. Entering 100 in the quantity field is entirely different from entering 100 USDT in the amount field, so be sure to check the input units. For market orders, follow the current order window to see whether quantity, amount, or both can be entered.

Even for BTC, BTC/USDT and BTC/USDC use different assets to quote and settle the price. Do not assume that the USDT you hold will automatically appear as an available balance for another trading pair. For similarly named tokens, check the ticker and trading pair. The purpose of this step is not to choose when to buy, but to prevent errors in selecting the trading asset or entering the wrong units.

4. Difference between market and limit orders

A market order uses the executable prices in the order book when the order arrives. A limit order sets the maximum price at which you will buy or the minimum price at which you will sell. A market order therefore aims for quick execution rather than a guaranteed price, while a limit order gives you price control in exchange for the possibility that it will not be filled.

Order typeWhat it controlsWhat to watch for
MarketOrder quantity or amountAverage execution price and full execution are not guaranteed
LimitMaximum buy price or minimum sell priceMay remain pending or be partially filled; immediate execution is also possible
Post OnlyCondition for the order to remain on the order book as a makerAn order that would execute immediately may be canceled
Market orders: executable price and slippage; limit orders: price control and the possibility of waiting
AKEYXIllustrative diagram. A market order does not guarantee the displayed price, and a limit order does not guarantee execution. Check the current product and account screen to see whether Post Only and other features are supported. This is not an actual OKX screen.

For example, if the best ask is 50,000 USDT, placing a buy limit order at 50,100 USDT does not mean the order waits until the price reaches 50,100; it may immediately execute against available sell orders at or below that price. In this case, it may be classified as Taker. Conversely, a buy order at 49,000 USDT will remain pending if there is no matching sell order. The fact that a chart shows a particular price does not confirm that your entire order was filled.

A market order may be filled at multiple prices. If liquidity is low or the order is large, slippage—the difference between the expected price and the average execution price—may increase. The official standard order rules explain that price limits also apply to spot market orders and that any unfilled portion may be canceled if the order is not fully executed within those limits. Do not treat the retry rules for regular market orders and orders generated by TP/SL or Trigger as the same.

5. Steps for placing and verifying buy and sell orders

  1. Open Trade → Spot in the official app or website and confirm that it is regular spot trading. In the app, you may need to tap Trade again to open the product selection screen.
  2. Select the trading pair and verify whether you are buying or selling. If selling, check the available quantity of the relevant base asset.
  3. Select Market or Limit. For a limit order, check the price, quantity, and amount together, and review the minimum order requirements and input units.
  4. If a confirmation screen appears, check the product, trading pair, direction, price, and quantity again. Do not submit the order if you do not understand the relevant conditions.
  5. After submitting, check the status, actual filled quantity, average price, and fee under Open orders, Order history, or the execution details.

“Order successful” on screen may mean only that the order was accepted. Unfilled orders may remain under Open orders, while completed or canceled orders can be found in Order history. Check that the trading pair and date range filters, as well as the current product, are correct so you do not confuse different orders. If no record is visible, do not submit the same order again without checking its status first, as this could result in duplicate execution.

After selling, the resulting asset, such as USDT, remains on the platform. Completing a spot sale does not mean that funds have been deposited into your bank account or withdrawn to an external wallet. Withdrawals are a separate process requiring checks of eligibility, address, network, minimum amount, and fees. Do not assume that Transfer, Sell, and Convert buttons shown on the same screen all perform the same function.

6. Partial fills and cancellations: trades already filled cannot be reversed

If you place an order for 10 and only 4 are filled while 6 remain pending, canceling the remainder is a request concerning the 6 unfilled units. It does not restore the 4 filled units to their original asset. Trading in the opposite direction to reverse the transaction would be a separate new trade and may incur a price difference and new fees.

Canceling only the remaining order after 4 of 10 units are filled and 6 are pending
AKEYXIllustrative diagram. The 10 gray units are divided into 4 filled and 6 pending. The 4 filled units remain even after canceling the remainder. Distinguish a cancellation request from cancellation actually being completed. This is not an actual OKX screen.

A trade may execute while you are clicking the cancel button, so do not assume the quantity shown immediately after requesting cancellation is the final result. Check again to see whether the order status has changed to canceled and how much has been filled cumulatively. No trading fee is charged on the unfilled portion, but fees for any portion that was filled still apply. Multiple execution records do not, by themselves, mean that you were charged multiple times.

7. Check the actual fees and quantity received

Maker/Taker is determined by the actual execution method, not the order name. Executions that remain on the order book and provide liquidity may have a different rate from executions that take existing orders. Check the current applicable rate under Fees for the trading pair you are logged into, or under More → Fee rules in the app. Assets → My trading fees on the web is also a way to check your account rate; do not use the reference rate shown while logged out as the actual rate for every account.

Illustrative assumptions: If a BTC buy execution is 0.002 BTC, the fee for that execution is 0.10%, and the fee is deducted in BTC, then the fee is 0.002 × 0.001 = 0.000002 BTC, and the amount received is 0.001998 BTC. Under a separate assumption that the proceeds from a sale are 100 USDT and 0.10% is deducted in USDT, the fee is 0.10 USDT, and the amount received is 99.90 USDT. These two examples are not one continuous round-trip trade calculation; the actual applicable rate, rounding, and deduction currency are determined by the execution details.

This calculation excludes the spread, slippage, external deposit and withdrawal costs, asset price fluctuations, and rebates. Spot trading fees and perpetual futures funding fees are also different costs. For details on the fee structure, see OKX Fee calculation and checking actual rates. You do not need to trade to check whether referral code OKDCC is linked or offers benefits, and the code being displayed does not mean the fee for this order was automatically discounted.

8. Troubleshooting Failed or Unfilled Orders

SituationWhat to check first
Insufficient balanceFunding/Trading location, the settlement asset for the trading pair, existing open orders
Below the minimum order sizeThe current minimum amount and quantity for the trading pair, and the input units
Limit order is pendingPrice conditions, opposing orders and liquidity, cumulative executed quantity
Market order only partially filledPrice limits, liquidity, and the cancellation status of the remainder
Post Only order automatically canceledWhether the price would have executed immediately, and the current order conditions
Assets changed despite cancellationExecutions before cancellation and final execution details

We do not give one minimum order amount that applies to every coin. Official guidance also specifies minimum trade amounts for some coins, so check the current rules and error message for the selected trading pair. Minimum deposit, minimum withdrawal, and minimum order amounts are separate requirements. Do not increase an order blindly just to make the rejection message go away; first identify which requirement was not met.

If the issue is not resolved, contact official support with the trading pair, order time and time zone, order ID, product type, error message, and execution and cancellation records. Do not send your password, verification code, seed phrase, or API secret key. When sharing a screen containing personal information, hide unnecessary account details. It is important to compare records with the same order ID rather than looking only at the numbers on the app screen.

9. Pre-Order Checklist and Risks

Five checks: eligibility, whether margin is involved, trading pair and amount, fees and limits, and order status
AKEYX Illustrative diagram. The icons represent items to check and do not mean that a particular user's eligibility or order has been verified. This is not an actual OKX screen.
  • Is this spot trading pair available in your region and on your account?
  • Did you intend to trade spot without borrowing, and are margin and auto-borrow disabled?
  • Are the Buy/Sell direction, trading pair, quantity, and amount units correct?
  • Do you understand the current applicable rate, minimum requirements, price controls, and the possibility that the order may remain unfilled?
  • Can you check the order ID, executed quantity, fees, and final status after submitting?

You do not need to use real funds just because you have read the explanation. If you are unfamiliar with the order structure, you can check the availability of the OKX demo trading environment supported by your account. Demo executions may not reflect the liquidity and slippage of the actual market. Spot trading also involves the risk of losing your entire principal and platform and account security risks; order types and discounts do not prevent losses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is selling spot the same as shorting futures?

No. A regular spot sale without borrowing is a trade that exchanges assets you hold for other assets. A futures short is a contract position with a separate structure involving margin, leverage, liquidation, and other factors.

Why was my limit order filled immediately?

A buy limit order sets the maximum price you will pay, and a sell limit order sets the minimum price you will accept. If the terms match existing opposing orders, it may execute immediately, and that execution may be classified as Taker.

Will a market order always be filled in full?

No. Due to price limits and order book liquidity, the order may be partially filled and the remainder canceled. The price shown on screen may also differ from the average execution price, so check the actual execution details.

If I cancel an order, are coins that have already been filled restored?

No. Cancellation applies to the unfilled remainder; the portion already executed remains. Further executions may occur while a cancellation request is being processed, so check the final cumulative executed quantity and status.

Why did I receive slightly fewer coins than the amount I bought?

The trading fee may have been deducted from the asset you bought. Distinguish between the order quantity, actual executed quantity, and fee currency, and do not assume that the entire difference is a fee.

Are trading fees charged on unfilled orders?

According to the official order guidance, no trading fee is charged on the unfilled portion. If an order is partially filled and then canceled, the fee on the portion already executed remains; external transfer costs are separate.
